Date: Thursday, September 29, 2011

Time: 8:00pm

Tickets: $45 Adults and $43 Seniors/Students

The Stockey Centre is ecstatic to be presenting the return of two highly noted Canadian musicians—Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy—to Parry Sound for an unforgettable Celtic performance.

“To call Natalie MacMaster the most dynamic performer in Celtic music today is high praise, but it still doesn’t get at just how remarkable a concert artist this Cape Breton Island fiddler has become.” —The Boston Herald, January 2004

Equally at home on the concert stage or at a folk festival, Cape Breton fiddler Natalie MacMaster is one of the most versatile and exciting young musicians on both the Folk and Celtic music scenes. Natalie’s live performances are a testament to her incandescent musicianship and boundless energy, featuring foot-tapping rave-ups, heart-rending ballads, and world-class step dancing. Natalie’s fiddling fireworks on traditional and contemporary Celtic melodies generate a kind of “Traditional Fusion” delivered with uplifting energy felt by the musicians and audiences of all ages. It’s a signature sound that has resonated with world audiences through 10 albums, multiple gold sales figures and 27 years; numerous Juno and East Coast Music Awards; two honorary degrees (from Niagara University, NY, and Trent University) and an honorary doctorate (St. Thomas University); the Order Of Canada – and a reputation as one of Canada’s most captivating performers. She is an electrifying performer whose passionate proficiency on the beloved four-string amplifies the traditional East Coast sound for contemporary times.

Donnell Leahy is the eldest member of the awe-inspiring eight-member brother and sister act from Canada who produce a whirlwind triple threat of fiddle-driven music, dance and song. The band’s three acclaimed CDs— Leahy, Lakefield, and In All Things—have world-wide sales of over half a million copies.

The family continues to move forward as musicians and performers. Winter 2007 saw them release their first ever live DVD and CD. PBS audiences are currently watching Leahy’s third television special.

All that audiences need to do to understand the style that has come to be known as “Leahy” is look at their awards—Junos for Best New Group, Best Country Group, and Best Instrumental Album, the most played folk/roots song in Canada in 2004 and the Socan award for Folk/Jazz instrumentalist the following year. Their self-titled album rose to number four on the Billboard world music charts and found its way onto the soundtrack of the award-winning movie The Hanging Garden. On stage Leahy brought 175 audiences to their feet when they opened for pop-star Shania Twain on her inaugural world tour.

Leahy brings their whole being to each and every performance. Their life story reads like a Hollywood movie; a large family raised without a television on a farm in the small town of Lakefield, Ontario, Canada. In fact, their life story was so compelling that it became the subject of an Oscar winning documentary— The Leahys: Music Most of All. The film foretold the success that would follow. Pure, authentic—Leahy continues to be one of Canada’s most sought after exports.

Join us at the Stockey Centre on Thursday, September 29, 2011 for this outstanding collaboration of two exceedingly talented Canadian musicians. The performance will consist of four on-stage musicians. Tickets are $45.00 for Adults and $43.00 for Seniors/Students. Hope to see you out for a memorable evening of Celtic music.

It’s hard to believe, looking out the window right now, but summer is right around the corner. And one of the prime harbingers of spring, aside from robins and daffodils, the Stockey Centre Summer Brochure, is getting ready for a mid-April arrival.

We’ve long known there is a lot of creative talent in our neck of the woods, and we love to showcase it every chance we get. Now there is another chance: your artwork could be featured on the cover of the new brochure!

The Stockey Centre prints 25,000 brochures each summer, and this year we’d like those 25,000 people to see another facet of our talented residents.

The size of the cover is 4 inches wide by 7 inches tall, so it must fit on that. A few elements must be included in your work (our name, logo, phone number, web address and the date: this is a working document, after all) which can be downloaded with a submission form from our website. After that, it is up to you and your chosen medium of expression.

And it is not just bragging rights that you will win if yours is the entry selected: the winner will receive a $150 credit for any Stockey Centre Presents event in the brochure!
The details, logos and forms can be found on the contest closing date on our Events Calendar, March 23rd. http://www.stockeycentre.com/calendar-expanded/207/stockey-centre-summer-brochure-cover-contest-closes

Please submit all entries to the attention of Greg Hancock, Marketing and Special Events Coordinator, either in person at the Stockey Centre or by email at marketing@stockeycentre.com . Submissions made electronically must be in either Press Quality Adobe PDF, hi resolution jpg (full size at 300 dpi) or in hard copy and all submissions must be accompanied by a signed submission form. All submissions must be received by March 23rd at 5:00 pm. Final decision of the winner will rest solely with Stockey Centre staff.

You can enter as many times as you like, so don’t delay. It’s time to share your talent with 25,000 people!

We are ecstatic to have the girls of Dala returning to the Stockey Centre!

Proud recipients of the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year, female duo Dala have established themselves as major rising stars in the pop-folk circuit. Recently, Dala has earned their very first Juno Award nomination! Their live album “Girls From The North Country” has been nominated in the category of Roots and Traditional Album of the Year: Group.

The sheer joy with which they perform is infectious, turning first-time listeners into instant fans. Dala have toured across Canada six times, opening for artists such as Jann Arden, Tom Cochrane, Matthew Good, Stuart McLean of the CBC’s Vinyl Café and most recently, Chantal Kreviazuk who they opened for here at the Stockey Centre in December 2009. You might also recognize Dala from their performance here in October 2009 for the Neil Young Tribute.

Drawing upon influences like The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Bob Dylan, Dala write songs that are both catchy and insightful. Amanda’s ethereal soprano voice blends seamlessly with Sheila’s velvety alto, creating the lush harmonies that have become their trademark. To accentuate their beautiful voices, Dala will be using the perfect Stockey Centre acoustics to record a live album at this show!

The combination of this unique group in the unique Stockey venue on Friday, May 27th, 2011 is something you do not want to miss. Tickets are on sale to now Members Only and go on sale to the general public on Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011 at 9:00am. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $33 for Seniors and Students.

Hope to see everyone here for a great show!

This performance is proudly sponsored by Parry Sound Insurance Ltd. and Horseshoe Pines Marina.

Fernandez the Hypnotist has dazzled audiences the world over with his spectacular brand of hypnosis. A mind boggling presentation where members of the audience volunteer to create the most hilarious hypnotic show you will ever witness. Hypnotist Fernandez delights audiences worldwide with his dynamic stage presence and original material.

Fernandez has appeared with Jerry Lewis, Bob Hope, John Candy and Dan Ackroyd, to name a few. He has also starred in the theatrical revue “City Lites” at Trump’s Castle Hotel in Atlantic City, and presented his own stage spectacular, “Caliente” at the Jaragua Hotel and Casino in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic for two years. In 1990 Fernandez became a certified Hypnotherapist and has produced a series of hypnosis seminars and CD’s.

Although his feats of hypnotism appear to defy reason, the only way to believe or disbelieve, is to see them for yourself. Fernandez is one of the premiere hypnotists in the world today, known for spellbinding performances and standing room only crowds. Even the most hardened of skeptics will walk away from the show shaking their heads in utter amazement.

Tickets go on sale to Members only Wednesday, January 19th at 9:00am and to the general public on Wednesday, February 2nd at 9:00am. Don’t miss your chance to see this spectacular live performance on Friday, May 6, 2011!

Tickets are $32 for Adults and $30 for Seniors and Students.

We’re very excited to have made a huge concert announcement last week at the Stockey Centre! If you enjoyed our Kardinal Offishall show or if you were interested in attending but weren’t able to make it, this will definitely be of interest to you.

You’ve probably heard of him, but K’NAAN has established himself in the music industry by providing a unique combination of reggae, funk, pop, soul and, above all, hip-hop. Even if you don’t know his name, you for sure know his music because his world smash hit “Wavin’ Flag” was re-recorded with a number of extremely popular artists and released to raise funds for Haiti after the devastating earthquake in January. “Wavin’ Flag” was also chosen as one of the anthems for the FIFA World Cup and has been deemed the “Peoples’ Anthem,” with each version highly frequented on radio stations throughout Ontario. K’NAAN’s sophomore album Troubadour was released on February 17, 2009 and immediately considered a hip hop album like no other, evident by his 2010 Juno Awards of Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year, showing that he is much appreciated by our fellow Canadians. You can learn more about K’NAAN’s journey and sample some of his music on his official website at http://knaanmusic.ning.com/ or get a taste of K’NAAN’s music by viewing the video on our webpage at http://www.stockeycentre.com/calendar-expanded/120/knaan.

Fresh off the global stage at the FIFA world cup, you can see K’NAAN on our intimate and acoustically perfect Stockey stage on October 6th. Tickets are $69 each and are on sale to Members Only until August 10th and 9am at which point they go on sale to the general public. Check out this exclusive performance at the Stockey Centre as K’NAAN successfully blends samples and live instrumentation for a sound that’s both rooted in traditional African melodies and the classic hip-hop tradition. We hope to see you here!

By the way! Last night K’NAAN was on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, check out this YouTube clip to see his performance! http://bit.ly/bxtlfx
