This Week at the Stockey: Booming Bands on the Bay Performances

July 6th, 2012

This week we’ve had the good fortune of some hot summer weather! And by good fortune I’m referring to the view of the blistering hot sun from the comfort of the air conditioned Stockey Centre. It’s no wonder the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame has been packed lately with people of all ages. It’s an excellent way to take an hour or two break from the sun, play some interactive games, and learn about Parry Sound’s own Bobby Orr.

On Tuesday, July 3rd we held our weekly Bands on the Bay event. Hollis and the Widows featuring Parry Sound native Jason Turiff, Steve Witt, and Brandon “Hollis” Shantz, and the Northern Dancers, including Kyle James Smith, James MacDonald and locals J.P. Borchardt and Andrew House, put on an unforgettable performance. Hollis and the Widows have a unique sound of indie-‘stalker’ rock infused with a little bit of blues and country. The Northern Dancers are in indie-rock band inspired by Canadian rock music from the ‘90s. The event was held inside the Performance Hall where the acoustics were flawless. Combined with the delectable dinner items provided by, Now That’s Catering, the evening was a smashing success. We welcome these talented young musicians to return to our stage again!

Although normally only held on Tuesday nights, there are so many talented local performers, we added a second Bands on the Bay event this past Thursday! Parry Sound Idol winner, Emmie-Lee Bowman took to our outdoor stage with an outstanding performance. Her powerful vocals surely wowed the audience. For more information on upcoming shows, please visit our Events Calendar by clicking HERE.

Next week is sure to be a busy one with Debbie Misener-Jones taking the stage on Tuesday evening as part of our Bands on the Bay series. With the dedication of, Now That’s Catering, we’ve moved from BBQ fare to a more substantial dinner menu including mouth-watering items such as Stuffed Baked Portobello Mushrooms, Beef Dip Supreme, Roasted Teriyaki Chicken Breast, Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail, and much more. Be sure to bring your appetite with you to the show!

On Wednesday the 11th at 8pm the highly anticipated ABBAMANIA and the Bee-Gees return to the Stockey Stage! There are still some tickets left. Get yours HERE at our online Box Office or call (877) 746-4466.

Have a lovely weekend and I look forward to reporting to you on next week’s events!

Let the Summer Fun Begin!

June 29th, 2012

What a wonderfully busy week it has been here at the Stockey Centre! Monday morning began with a lovely view from the office windows as we watched The Great Race set up in the parking lot. The Race began around 10:30am and in the following hour and a half nearly 100 antique vehicles were displayed. My favourite of course was the old-fashioned Volkswagen Beetles resembling the “Herbie” from the classic 1960s film, The Love Bug. The Stockey Centre was the 6th stop on the long journey that will end this Canada Day, July 1st, in Dearborn, Michigan. The race was a smashing success as the parking lot was filled with local car lovers. We hope to see the beautiful old cars return again next year!

Tuesday we hosted our weekly Bands on the Bay Performance. The Michael Granka Band from Pointe au Baril put on a rockin’ show playing classic hits such as Steve Earle’s Copperhead Road and David Wilcox’s Riverboat Fantasy. The evening was filled with great music, delicious food prepared by Now That’s Catering, ice cold beverages, and a beautiful view of the sun setting over Georgian Bay. As my friend and I took in the wonderful sights and sounds, we relished in our good fortune and agreed that there was no better way to spend a summer evening. How lucky we all are to have this stunning body of water at our fingertips.

The Stockey Centre is fortunate this week to have two major shows back-to-back. The Cowboy Junkies performed last night at 8pm to a very excited audience. Margo Timmins, the lead vocalist for the group, sang with flawless perfection as her powerful voice reverberated through the performance hall walls. Her band (‘the boys’ as she calls them) consists of her brothers Michael Timmins, songwriter and guitar, and Pete Timmins, drums, as well as Alan Anton, bass, and Jeff Bird, a master of many instruments including the fiddle and the harmonica. The band played together with ease and grace while Margo entertained the crowd between sets, even giving two young girls in the front row roses. The show was well received by all and we welcome the return of the Cowboy Junkies any time!

The next show to take place is tonight at 8pm. Down with Webster is a show highly anticipated by the youth in Parry Sound. With an opening by Stereo Kid it is sure to be a hit! And what better way is there to start the summer than by going to a hip show?  The show is selling quickly and promises to rock the house! There are still some tickets left that can be found at, by phone at (877)746-4466, at the Box Office, AND even through our Facebook Page!  As I sit here typing the band is setting up downstairs and the anticipation of it all is making me wonder, should I go and take a peek? I think I will…

Thank you all for reading and I look forward to reporting to you on next week’s events!

Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy: Two Fiddles, Two Pianos

April 6th, 2011

Date: Thursday, September 29, 2011

Time: 8:00pm

Tickets: $45 Adults and $43 Seniors/Students

The Stockey Centre is ecstatic to be presenting the return of two highly noted Canadian musicians—Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy—to Parry Sound for an unforgettable Celtic performance.

“To call Natalie MacMaster the most dynamic performer in Celtic music today is high praise, but it still doesn’t get at just how remarkable a concert artist this Cape Breton Island fiddler has become.” —The Boston Herald, January 2004

Equally at home on the concert stage or at a folk festival, Cape Breton fiddler Natalie MacMaster is one of the most versatile and exciting young musicians on both the Folk and Celtic music scenes. Natalie’s live performances are a testament to her incandescent musicianship and boundless energy, featuring foot-tapping rave-ups, heart-rending ballads, and world-class step dancing. Natalie’s fiddling fireworks on traditional and contemporary Celtic melodies generate a kind of “Traditional Fusion” delivered with uplifting energy felt by the musicians and audiences of all ages. It’s a signature sound that has resonated with world audiences through 10 albums, multiple gold sales figures and 27 years; numerous Juno and East Coast Music Awards; two honorary degrees (from Niagara University, NY, and Trent University) and an honorary doctorate (St. Thomas University); the Order Of Canada – and a reputation as one of Canada’s most captivating performers. She is an electrifying performer whose passionate proficiency on the beloved four-string amplifies the traditional East Coast sound for contemporary times.

Donnell Leahy is the eldest member of the awe-inspiring eight-member brother and sister act from Canada who produce a whirlwind triple threat of fiddle-driven music, dance and song. The band’s three acclaimed CDs— Leahy, Lakefield, and In All Things—have world-wide sales of over half a million copies.

The family continues to move forward as musicians and performers. Winter 2007 saw them release their first ever live DVD and CD.  PBS audiences are currently watching Leahy’s third television special.

All that  audiences need to do to understand the style that has come to be known as “Leahy” is look at their awards—Junos for Best New Group, Best Country Group, and Best Instrumental Album, the most played folk/roots song in Canada in 2004 and the Socan award for Folk/Jazz instrumentalist the following year.   Their self-titled album rose to number four on the Billboard world music charts and found its way onto the soundtrack of the award-winning movie The Hanging Garden. On stage Leahy brought 175 audiences to their feet when they opened for pop-star Shania Twain on her inaugural world tour.

Leahy brings their whole being to each and every performance. Their life story reads like a Hollywood movie; a large family raised without a television on a farm in the small town of Lakefield, Ontario, Canada. In fact, their life story was so compelling that it became the subject of an Oscar winning documentary— The Leahys: Music Most of All.  The film foretold the success that would follow. Pure, authentic—Leahy continues to be one of Canada’s most sought after exports.

Join us at the Stockey Centre on Thursday, September 29, 2011 for this outstanding collaboration of two exceedingly talented Canadian musicians. The performance will consist of four on-stage musicians. Tickets are $45.00 for Adults and $43.00 for Seniors/Students. Hope to see you out for a memorable evening of Celtic music.

Summer Brochure Cover Contest

March 11th, 2011

It’s hard to believe, looking out the window right now, but summer is right around the corner. And one of the prime harbingers of spring, aside from robins and daffodils, the Stockey Centre Summer Brochure, is getting ready for a mid-April arrival.

We’ve long known there is a lot of creative talent in our neck of the woods, and we love to showcase it every chance we get. Now there is another chance: your artwork could be featured on the cover of the new brochure!

The Stockey Centre prints 25,000 brochures each summer, and this year we’d like those 25,000 people to see another facet of our talented residents.

The size of the cover is 4 inches wide by 7 inches tall, so it must fit on that. A few elements must be included in your work (our name, logo, phone number, web address and the date: this is a working document, after all) which can be downloaded with a submission form from our website. After that, it is up to you and your chosen medium of expression.

And it is not just bragging rights that you will win if yours is the entry selected: the winner will receive a $150 credit for any Stockey Centre Presents event in the brochure!
The details, logos and forms can be found on the contest closing date on our Events Calendar, March 23rd.

Please submit all entries to the attention of Greg Hancock, Marketing and Special Events Coordinator, either in person at the Stockey Centre or by email at . Submissions made electronically must be in either Press Quality Adobe PDF, hi resolution jpg (full size at 300 dpi) or in hard copy and all submissions must be accompanied by a signed submission form. All submissions must be received by March 23rd at 5:00 pm. Final decision of the winner will rest solely with Stockey Centre staff.

You can enter as many times as you like, so don’t delay. It’s time to share your talent with 25,000 people!

Dala Booked at the Stockey Centre

February 9th, 2011

We are ecstatic to have the girls of Dala returning to the Stockey Centre!

Proud recipients of the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year, female duo Dala have established themselves as major rising stars in the pop-folk circuit. Recently, Dala has earned their very first Juno Award nomination! Their live album “Girls From The North Country” has been nominated in the category of Roots and Traditional Album of the Year: Group.

The sheer joy with which they perform is infectious, turning first-time listeners into instant fans. Dala have toured across Canada six times, opening for artists such as Jann Arden, Tom Cochrane, Matthew Good, Stuart McLean of the CBC’s Vinyl Café and most recently, Chantal Kreviazuk who they opened for here at the Stockey Centre in December 2009. You might also recognize Dala from their performance here in October 2009 for the Neil Young Tribute.

Drawing upon influences like The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Bob Dylan, Dala write songs that are both catchy and insightful. Amanda’s ethereal soprano voice blends seamlessly with Sheila’s velvety alto, creating the lush harmonies that have become their trademark. To accentuate their beautiful voices, Dala will be using the perfect Stockey Centre acoustics to record a live album at this show!

The combination of this unique group in the unique Stockey venue on Friday, May 27th, 2011 is something you do not want to miss.
